I have a Mastercraft multimeter which gives a wrong reading when it is kept in the dcv mode. Acv is ok. HELP!
The dcv reading does not remain constant. Reconnecting the leads quite a few times sets the meter right. All the other modes work perfectly alright (Verified).

Why is it that the meter provides correct readings at times?
You should always read your meter when it is sitting in the same position every time. The first thing you do is zero out the meter needle mechanically with the input test leads shorted out. You also have to consider to calibrate your scales using a known voltage standard. I do this by getting a battery and measuring it with a DVM and then use the readout as a standard for my VOM. And, as TV Guy suggested, make sure your batteries are good. If none of the above seem to help, then you may have one or more of the precision resistors for the DC range scale out of tolerance.
Added info:
Get a can of Contact Clean from Radio Shack and spray the scale switch as you rotate it back and forth. Then blow it out with compressed air. See if that helps.
