Boy, 11, bites pit bull

July 25th, 2008
An 11-year old boy is in Brazil’s media spotlight after sinking his teeth into the neck of a dog that attacked him. Local newspapers reported on Thursday that Gabriel Almeida was playing in his uncle’s backyard in the city of Belo Horizonte when a pit bull named Tita lunged at him and bit him in the left arm.Almeida grabbed the dog by the neck and bit back - biting so hard that he lost a canine tooth.

Almeida tells the O Globo newspaper: “It is better to lose a tooth than one’s life.”

Stonemasons working nearby chased the dog away before it could attack again.

The Folha de S. Paulo newspaper said the boy received four stitches at a local hospital while the dog was taken to a pound and may be killed.

No news on if either had rabies

How not to launch a boat

July 25th, 2008

Three hapless sailors had their 4×4 car washed away after using it to launch a boat.

The group took their open-top vessel down to the shore using the Isuzu Trooper.

But as they enjoyed a sail along the seashore they left the car on the beach – where it was soon trapped by the rising tide.

 4x4

When the men returned, they found their vehicle had been inundated by the waves on the beach at Howdiemont Sands, Longhoughton, Northumberland.

They had to wait several hours for the tide to go down before they could retrieve the soggy Isuzu.

Farmer Sandy Frater, of Boulmer, tried to pull the vehicle from the water but failed in his attempts because of the rising waves.

Police and coastguards arrived at the scene soon after and the vehicle was eventually removed more than four hours later.

Blondes prove a stupid point

July 25th, 2008

They may have more fun but do blondes really live up to their airhead reputation? Er, how can we break this gently? Yes.

Fair-haired folk really are less intelligent than brunettes, a study has shown.

Blonde women – and men – were trounced by their brown-haired rivals in a series of online mental alertness tests.

But, before you brunettes get too smug, be aware the blonde stereotype was not the only one to be proved right.

Southerners are more mentally switched on than Northerners and left-handed people are brighter than right-handers, the experiment found.

Earlier this year, a study revealed brunettes made up 62 per cent of the wives and girlfriends of the world’s top billionaires.

Other research has revealed men prefer brunettes to blondes.

The online tests were designed to challenge the airhead stereotype and several other common rivalries.

They also revealed tall people were more alert than short folk and night owls out-smarted early-risers.

‘Wrong bras’ can damage breasts

July 25th, 2008

Women who wear the wrong kind of bra could be damaging their breasts, researchers have warned.

The breast biomechanics team at the University of Portsmouth said poor support could lead to fragile ligaments in the breast being stretched.

Wait….. There’s a team of people that looks at breasts - for a living….. MAN AM I SO IN THE WRONG JOB!!!

They said that during exercise, breasts move up to 21cm (8.26inches), up and down, in and out and side to side - but most bras just limit vertical movement.

And they warned crop-top sports bras did not give enough support.

The research team has tested about 50 bra designs on hundreds of women during the past three years.

Wendy Hedger, one of the scientists who carried out the work, said: “Many women have strong preferences for certain styles of bra and won’t buy anything else.

“They won’t even look at anything that doesn’t look like the sort of bra they are used to wearing.

“In sports bras, for example, many women won’t buy a bra that resembles their everyday bra and does up at the back - they think if it can’t be pulled over their heads like a crop top, then it’s not a real sports bra.

“But this is not true and many sports bras do up at the back in the same way as a traditional bra and do a very good job of supporting women.”

Ms Hedger added: “There’s a social stigma about certain sizes. Many women don’t want to be seen as too small or too big and buy a bra that doesn’t fit well in order to be what they consider to be a normal size.

“And many other women are unaware that they are wearing a badly-fitting bra or unknowingly wear the wrong bra size because they are routinely being sold ill-fitting bras.

Judge: Girl’s name, Talula Does The Hula, won’t do

July 24th, 2008

A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.

Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.

The new name was not made public to protect the girl’s privacy.

“The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child’s parents have shown in choosing this name,” he wrote. “It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily.”

The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her “K” instead, the girl’s lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.

In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.

Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter “and tragically, Violence,” he said.

Just imagine the school register call… Mind you, I worked in a school where there was a Wayne Dear and Wayne White in the same class - we also had a Che, Elvis and Levi (who were brothers)

Inflatable penguins spark sea rescue

July 24th, 2008
A major air and sea search off the Scottish coast was called off - when two inflatable penguins were found.

An RAF rescue helicopter and a lifeboat were called out off Rosehearty, Buchan, after a member of the public reported a possible microlight crash.

However, the Fraserburgh lifeboat crew found two 3ft inflatable penguins, reports the BBC.

Aberdeen Coastguard’s Alan Shand said the sheen from the balloons may have caused the confusion.

Mr Shand told the BBC: “A member of the public called, thinking it was a crashed microlight, from the sheen.

“It was two large balloons. I can see why they mistook the balloons.”

worker fired over phone pics of female

July 24th, 2008
A 15-year-old boy has been fired from his job at Idlewild Park in Ligonier for allegedly taking cell phone pictures and video of a woman undressing in a water park changing room. Police have also charged with boy with disorderly conduct, but are not identifying him because of his age.

Ligonier police say the incident happened Monday and that the boy erased the images before police could view them.

A park spokeswoman confirmed the boy had been fired but referred all other comment to the police.

Police say the boy attached the phone to cords on a broom handle so he could lift the device over a changing room wall. The woman notified security when she saw a red blinking light on the phone.

So the fact that someone had fastened a phone to a broom and was holding it over the cubical wall - wasnt a problem to her - just the red blinking light..

How to make breast milk taste like banana milkshake

July 24th, 2008

Nursing mothers were today shown how to produce the human equivalent of a banana milk shake from their breasts.

All they have to do is munch a banana an hour or less before feeding time, scientists have discovered.

Breast milk can be given other flavours the same way. In tests, women were able to make their milk taste of menthol, caraway seed and liquorice, as well as banana.

Researchers believe the rich variety of flavours in breast milk may prime a child to try new foods later in life.

Previous studies suggested that what a mother ate could affect the taste preferences of her baby.

Infants of mothers who drank carrot juice during pregnancy or breastfeeding seemed to particularly enjoy carrot-flavoured cereal.

tudy leader Helene Hausner told New Scientist magazine: “It’s not like if the mother eats apple pie the baby thinks ‘mmmm, apple pie’, but it may make them more accepting of the flavour of other foods.

“Breastfeeding may prepare the infant for flavour changes and new experiences when they start to eat solid foods.”

How many carrot flavoured breakfast cereals do you know about..

Woman Upset That Newspaper Won’t Run Obituary For Dog

July 24th, 2008
A grieving woman in Orange County says her loved one is being discriminated against by a local newspaper. She says the West Orange Times decided not to run an obituary after they saw the picture.

Kimberly DeWolf is so angry she is threatening to sue if Bailey is not given the proper farewell. She was preparing for a 13th birthday party next month.

“His birthday would’ve been August 18th. He’s been the love of my life. My parents, their grandchild,” she said.

But instead of a celebration, Kimberly was at a funeral service.

“He’s actually buried at my parents house, has a gravesite,” she said.

During a week off for bereavement, Kimberly wrote an obituary and wanted it placed in her local paper, the West Orange Times. But when editors saw the picture of Bailey, there was a problem in their eyes.

“He’s not a dog, he’s my child, he’s never been a dog,” Kimberly said. “They’re discriminating against me because it’s a dog in their eyes.”

Pet rabbit saves Australian couple from fire

July 24th, 2008
 (a rabbit…I think)

A pet rabbit in Australia was credited with saving its owners Thursday after scratching at the door of their bedroom as their home burned, emergency workers said.

The couple were in their bedroom of their Melbourne home Thursday morning when the pet, named simply “Rabbit”, began scratching at the door prompting the husband to investigate, Metropolitan Fire Brigade commander Mick Swift said.

He said the man discovered a fire in the back room with smoke spreading through the house and the couple could have been seriously injured if the bunny had not hopped to the rescue.

“The rabbit saved the couple from injury,” Swift said.

He said it took four fire crews to extinguish the blaze, which caused substantial damage. The rabbit and its owners were unhurt.

Morse says “neither knew what year it was, but one of them knew their current golf score.”
One of the men had obvious lightning entry and exit wounds, and the other had burnt hair and clothing, and one of his shoes had been blown apart. Both men were taken to the hospital and at last report were in stable condition.

‘Neglect’ of Bletchley condemned

July 24th, 2008
A call to save Bletchley Park has gone out from the UK’s computer scientists.

More than 100 academics have signed a letter saying the code-cracking centre and crucible of the UK computer industry deserves better treatment.

The letter says Bletchley, in Bucks, should be put on a secure financial basis like other “great museums”.

“We cannot allow this crucial and unique piece of both British and World heritage to be neglected in this way,” the letter to The Times said.

The academics were brought together by Dr Sue Black, head of the computer science department at the University of Westminster, who was moved to act after visiting Bletchley Park in early July.

“I went up there and felt quite upset by what I saw,” she said.

Hut 6 at Bletchley Park, BBC

Many of the buildings on the Bletchley estate were in a state of serious disrepair, she said. One building, where code-breakers worked during World War II, was falling apart, said Dr Black, and was protected by a blue tarpaulin that was nailed down over it.

Describing Bletchley as a “gem”, Dr Black said it was a “national disgrace” that such a historic site was being allowed to fall into ruin.

“I do not know why they do not have funding as a national museum,” she said.

Poodle drove car

July 23rd, 2008
A Chinese couple received a police caution for trying to teach their dog to drive.

Traffic police at Liunan spotted a car driving too slowly on a local expressway, reports Nanguo Morning Post.

As they pulled in behind the car, officers were amazed to see a poodle with its front legs on the steering wheel.

The dog’s rear legs were resting on the woman driver who was controlling the foot pedals.

“We immediately signaled the car to pull over,” said one of the patrolling officers.

The woman says she and her boyfriend came up with the idea of teaching their pet dog, Niu Niu, to drive after noticing the expressway was nearly empty and the weather was good.

Police gave them a warning ticket and asked them to take a more responsible attitude when driving on the expressway.

Lego Imperial Star Destroyer

July 23rd, 2008
I first saw a Lego Imperial Star Destroyer at the Power House Museum during the Star Wars Magic of Myth exhibition.

Of course I immediately wanted one.

But it would take nearly two years before the dream became a reality. After much drooling over sets that went on ebay, I finally took the plunge on a buy-it-now set. I then waited the two full months for the surface mail package to arrive.

Bit was it worth it

stardest1.jpg

Well the aswer is….

stardest2.jpg

Time spent

I spent very approximately 12 hours building this set:

Tantive IV and name plate: 1 hour
A-frame structure: 1 3/4 hours
A-frame detail: 3/4 hour
Frame attachment and stand: 3/4 hour
Engines: 1/2 hour
Wings: 3 1/2 hours
Main body: 2 1/4 hours
Spine: 1/4 hour
Command deck: 3/4 hour
Last layer of body: 1/4 hour

And definitely worth it :)

Had various friends and kids over to have a look at it today (Sunday). Although the kids were far more interested in playing with the Harry Potter lego I had out. Oh well :)
