What is the difference between a pro style qb and a system qb?

Honestly, I always hear of guys getting drafted higher because they make “pro style” throws and have more checks. Isn’t throwing a football the same thing no matter what offense you’re in? And what are check offs? Are they reads or something?

System QB’s have a limited skill set and they might put up amazing numbers in that system but be unable to have any success in any other offense.
- Think of guys like Alex Smith who ran almost entirely out of the shotgun in college and put up good numbers. Pro teams don’t run those plays nearly as much and he cant seem to have any success playing from under center.
- Graham Harrell also ran a system that greatly benefited his stats because it was totally pass happy which inflated his numbers. Physically he doesn’t have the tools to be a starter in the NFL.

A good pro QB is more adaptable and can run a much larger variety of plays with some success.

Check offs or check downs are exactly what the name implies. You don’t like what you see so you check off to something else.

Yinzer brings up a good point with Drew Brees. It also took him about 3-4 years and 2 teams (he was traded after the Chargers drafted another QB) to finally get the hang of it.
