What is the best way to find a stud and cut plaster walls?
Im having a hard time with plaster walls. They are 3/8″ drywall parged with 1/2″ plaster and 6″ or so steel lathe used in all corners.
Stud finders don’t work. I’ve resorted to drillingsmall holes to find studs and measuring from there. Any areas I do cut open I have to replace with double sheet panels of 3/8″ drywall.
Multimaster with masonary bit works ok but only to the drywall sheet. Plus a lot of work and dust. I can’t seem to save the panels like I can with drywall. It just cracks and breaks.
Plaster is tough. Locating a stud can be difficult because of the thickness of the wall, it always sounds the same when you are tapping on it and if you find a stud there is no guarantee that another will be 16″ oc from that one. If you can see the nails in your baseboard you can plumb up from there or simply remove the base and do your drilling to find the studs behind the removed piece. As far as cutting the plaster, reciprocating saw manufacturers make a plaster blade. It cuts gently and evenly on both the push and pull stroke as the teeth are not directed favoring one or the other. It also will help to screw a straight board to the side of the plaster you are going to keep ( or have someone hold it tightly to the wall) as this provides stability to the keeper part of the wall. The blades don’t work very well on that steel lathe but are terrific at all other areas.
