how can i hook up a 230 volt, 16 amp, single phase compressor to a home?
In my breaker box i have a double breaker of 60 amps which runs to my garage. The breaker that it runs to the garage is for 240 volt vac. I hooked it up myself by using 10/2 romex wire and a 250volt, 20 amp plug and receptable. and i made me a extension cord of 20 ft that resists 600 volts. When i pluged it in the compressor ran for a little bit, but then seemed to shut off like if it was starting to lose power. I dont know if the breaker in my garage is the problem since it is 240 volt vac max. and i have a plug& receptable of 250 volt? Or can it be my cord or wire? Any suggestions. PLEASE.
First, get a smaller breaker to run this. You are taking a chance of overloading the wiring and creating the potential for a fire. Depending on the distance it is run, the 10/2 is OK as long as it has a ground. Unless there is a need for the neutral for the controls, you don’t need one. The 20 Amp plug is right at the limit if you are correct on the 16 Amp load (16 x 125% = 20). Try to get a NEMA L6-30 twist lock cordset and receptacle if you need to be able to disconnect it easily. You’ll want to use SJO cord between the plug and the compressor.
When you tried to run it, did the cable, motor, or receptacle get hot? Did you check the pressure switch to see what the cutout pressure was set at? Did you check the motor nameplate to verify that you were connected correctly?
